Alternate routes into Ak

[mail recieved on the subject...]

I drove the Cassiar in late June and it was wet and gravelly, but the fuel was all open.

What's your route home?

Try to find a Milepost at a bookstore. Maybe you'd want to flip through the Cassiar section.

They have a message board at the website.

www.themilepost.com

Highway reports:

B.C.
http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/bchighways/roadreports/roadreports.htm

Alaska
http://www.dot.state.ak.us/

Cassiar Highway

The Cassiar Highway junctions with Yellowhead Highway 16 in British Columbia and travels north 446 miles/718 km to junction with the Alaska Highway west of Watson Lake, YT. The Cassiar also provides access to Hyder, AK, and Stewart, BC, via a 38-mile/61-km side road from Meziadin Junction at Milepost J 96.2, and to Telegraph Creek via a 70-mile/113-km side road from Dease Lake junction at Milepost J 300.9

Alaska-bound motorists will save 132 miles/213 km by taking the Yellowhead–Cassiar route (744 miles/1,197 km long) instead of the all-Alaska Highway route (876 miles/1,410 km long.) The Cassiar Highway, which was completed in 1972, is a somewhat rougher road than the Alaska Highway, and has fewer (but sufficient) fuel and service stops along the way.

Route number: BC Highway 37

Connects: Yellowhead Highway 16 and the Alaska Highway

Length: 446 miles

Road surface: 80 percent paved , 20 percent gravel

Road conditions: Fair to good. Although much of the highway is asphalt-surfaced, keep in mind that seal coat is subject to deterioration from weather and traffic. Also, a few bridges are still single lane. Watch for potholes at bridge ends and slippery bridge decks. There are several 8 percent grades. Drive with headlights on at all times. On gravel stretches of highway watch for washboard and potholes. Gravel road may be dusty in dry weather and muddy in wet weather. Watch for logging and freight trucks on the highway. Exercise extreme caution when passing or being passed by these trucks; reduce speed and allow trucks adequate clearance.

Season: Open all year

Highest summit: Gnat Pass 4,072 feet

Attractions: The Cassiar offers outstanding scenery and good wildlife viewing (bears, caribou, Dall sheep). The Stewart/Hyder area has much to offer visitors, including Bear Glacier, Salmon Glacier, Fish Creek Wildlife Viewing Area and a toaster museum. Telegraph Creek Road is very scenic side trip, with spectacular views of the Grand Canyon of the Stikine River.

Any Alaskans in New York? I live in Dallas, but will be in Manhattan for quite a few more months on business. I'm staying in the financial district. There are quite a number of good places to get a beer here, but alas the view isn't nearly as nice as Alaska.

I traveled to Ketchikan, Petersburg and Juneau in early 2003 on business. It was really nice to see again so many of the people and places that I love. Everyone made me feel like I was home. :-)

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Trip Photos & Notes

I've begun adding photos and notes about my recent Arctic National Wildlife Refuge trip to my web site. Feel free to pass on this link to anyone you feel would enjoy or benefit from information about ANWR.

I felt compelled to take this tact with my photo sharing (tying the images to my journal notes) after a conservative friend asked me, "Is ANWR as really as ugly as they say it is?" This alarmed me a great deal after having one of the best photo trips I've taken to date. The beauty of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is almost unparalleled.

Enjoy...
Hey expats: I am living in New York City and am from Alaska..You have to check out this new website I found... www.expats.com It’s quite amazing.. It’s a social networking service just for expats!. I’ve never seen anything like this…its a community for expats where if you are married or single , you can go in and meet other people that are expats from the same place as you...they also have a huge classified ads section—I am going to try to buy a car through it...and events as well...I love the fact that someone finally figured out that we all really want to form a community and eventually hook up with each other and this seems like a really upscale way to do it...very cool...check it out...its growing really fast—there are also expat links with all kinds of expat resources for people from Alaska.

the first murder in Petersburg in generations (known of anyway- people have been know to go out into the sound, and come back with less people). The guy was beaten, thrown out of a window, stabbed, and throat slit. Someone wanted him dead. I'm estimating that he either pissed off someone really wanted him dead, or we're witnessing what happens when you combine whiskey and meth.

Floyd died yesterday.

"Wednesday morning, one of his caregivers found Kaleak dead, still seated in front of his television in the tidy white house he rented off East Third Avenue and Eagle Street. Kaleak, 45, appeared to have died of natural causes, Anchorage police said."

I talked with Floyd a couple of times during my time in Anch, and have thought about him from time to time since. Sad to hear this. There should be a statue erected at the intersection of Minnesota and Spenard.

Anyone else remember him? Share.

I've found this tribe great for hooking up with all sorts of old friends I haven't heard from in years... and wouldn't mind seeing some of you in person if you're up there... plus meet some of the rest of y'all!

I'll take suggestions for a day and place, but I was thinking Sunday the 26th or Monday the 27th.

On Alaska expedition for troubled youths
Tuesday, April 27, 2004 Posted: 1212 GMT (2012 HKT)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A 15-year-old boy on a wilderness expedition for emotionally troubled youths woke up to find a 400-pound brown bear with a bad attitude sitting at his feet.

After trying unsuccessfully to back out of the tent, the boy was bitten in the forearm and decided to fight back, punching the bear with his left hand a half-dozen times, Alaska State Trooper Adam Benson said Monday.

When the teenager tried to run, the bear bit him again below his ribs, this time leaving a half-dozen puncture wounds on his back, Benson said.

The boy punched the bear again, and again she let him go, but chased him around a nearby stand of trees.

He eventually remembered an air horn in his gear, and blew it in the bear's muzzle, waking others in the camp, said Steve Prysunka, director of the six-week "Crossing Wilderness Expeditions for Youth" program.

Prysunka asked that the boy not be identified.

The bear finally turned and ran away after counselors blasted her with pepper spray and fired a flare at her feet, Prysunka said.

Later Saturday, following the morning attack, officials found the bear in the campsite area on Deer Island in southeast Alaska and killed her.

The boy was flown out to a hospital, where he was treated, then sent home to Barrow to give his wounds time to heal, Prysunka said.

"I think he is the biggest, baddest thing in the woods. He punched the bear," Prysunka said
Another Bear Mauling

On Monday 4-26-04 at 2029 hours, USCG Juneau advised Alaska State Troopers that they were responding by helicopter to Pybus Bay on the S.E. side of Admiralty Island for a reported bear mauling. A rescue swimmer was dropped into the water and began assessing the best plan for the rescue.

The victim, Scott D. Newman, 39 years old of Petersburg, was recovered by the Coast Guard and transported to the hospital in Sitka via USCG helicopter.

Newman suffered fractures to his left leg, left arm, left ankle, right hand and right forearm.

Troopers interviewed Newman at the hospital. According to Newman, a licensed big game guide, he and his client were on the last day of a ten day hunt when they spotted the bear. The men stalked the bear to an area where they could get a good shot. The client shot twice, hitting the bear, and then Newman fired as well. The bear ran into some brush, and Newman went after him. Newman came upon the bear in the brush and the bear turned and charged. Newman fired again, but isn't sure if he
hit the bear. The bear began biting Newman on his legs and arms, then turned away and lay down. Newman pulled out his radio and contacted the Coast Guard.

Troopers are returning to the scene today to complete their
investigation.

Ok, so, a friend of mine (lower 48 kid) doesn't believe me when I say that people in alaska use the term "out the road". As in "going [for a drive] out the road". Does anyone else here know what I am talking about? or am I _really_ out there?

I removed my Alaska plates today and put on Illinois plates. It only took 5 years. ;)

But I did bolt the rear Alaska plate on to the fairing of the bike rack on our car. So I'll still get that oh-so-educated question, "Didja drive all the way here?" ;)
It just breaks my heart listening to all of you speak so lovingly about Alaska and not being able to live here if you want to.
Well, you are all welcome to join the Anchorage tribe, we'll keep you up-to-date on what is goin on.
And please know that you are always welcome to surf my couch when you arrive back home.

Hello all. I have a Web site called Alaska Unbound. It is being built as a community blog for writings by and about expatriate Alaskans. Initially this will be for online publication only, but once there is enough material I plan to turn it into an actual book (that I will edit) to be sold on actual book store shelves.

If you are interested, stop by http://alaskaunbound.org and say hi. You can reply here, or email me through the blog if you have any questions.

Thanks, and nice to join the tribe.

Road-Ketchikan to Petersburg?

State proposes 'East Highway' from Ketchikan to Petersburg

By 2025, a trip out of Ketchikan might mean a drive to the north end of Revillagigedo Island, a ferry ride across Behm Canal and another drive across the upper Cleveland Peninsula. At that point, a traveler would drive to Canada on the Bradfield Road or take another shuttle ferry across Fools Inlet and drive to Wrangell via a Zimovia Highway extension.
The road network, dubbed the "East Highway," is one
proposal in a draft update of the Southeast Alaska Transportation Plan released by the DOT earlier this month.
"You would take a shuttle ferry from Wrangell to the South Mitkof ferry terminal and then drive from South Mitkof to the present Petersburg ferry terminal and get on a fast ferry to Juneau or Sitka," said Andy Hughes, regional planning chief for the state Department of Transportation.
The state's plan pushes more roads, faster travel and "waking hour" departures and arrivals on the Alaska Marine Highway System. It also has raised questions about cost, environmental obstacles and the need for so much change.
In the short term, the state would add more fast ferries. Some mainline service would remain, with two ferries traveling from Bellingham, Wash., through Southeast.

Well, tonight I fly home for Christmas... apparently there's a nice layer of snow in Anchorage, and 10 to 20 degree temperatures!

If anyone's going to be up there, we should hook up for a beer!

Whatever the case, hope everyone has very happy holidays!
